Just a Moment

16 Dec

I know this blog is all about crafting, cooking, and coupons- but I would be remiss if I didn’t take one quick moment to publicly recognize recent events in Newtown, Connecticut.

Over the past few days I’ve been drawn to the tragic news. Mostly I wanted to make sense of something that will never be comprehensible. I wanted to know why this happened, and how it happened. I have made myself sick imagining what it would be like if this took place in my town to my niece, my neighbor, or my child.

Today, after confronting the list of the victim’s names, I have tried to move forward. There’s a Mister Rogers quote that has shifted my perspective. He said:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.”

I am still tearful. I am still sad for what this means to all those families, and more broadly what this means about our society. But I have taken some comfort in the stories of all the good that happened on Friday. There were teachers and administrators that protected children by hiding them, shielding them, and ignoring their own safety to save young lives.

That is what I choose to focus on. The courageous acts of loving individuals.
